Pros & Cons Using The Forward Grazing Method

Pros & Cons Using The Forward Grazing Method

Forward grazing is when young calves have access to forage before the older cattle

This basically involves allow the younger animals onto a paddock, strip or block before the adults.

PROS

  • Allows the younger animals to get the best grass and avoid picking up intestinal diseases.
  • It involves less “set up” than creep feeding.
  • It is common practice on dairy farms, when replacement heifers lead the main herd.

CONS

  • Time consuming to install fencing systems.
  • Water systeming setup in the middle for all paddocks can cause excess trampling around the water source.
